Rwanda, a landlocked country lies in the Great Rift Valley of Central Africa, is highly elevated, consisting of hilly and mountainous physical natural beauty, referred to as “the land of a thousand hills”. This country has a vibrant culture and is known for its breathtaking scenery that is reminiscent of a tropical Switzerland.

It is richly blessed with exquisite flora and fauna that can be found throughout its volanoes, rainforests and sweeping plains. The greatest diversity of large mammals is found in the three national parks; Volcanoes National Park, Akagera National Park & Nyungwe Forest, all of which are designated conservation areas. Nyungwe forest boasts 13 primate species, including common chimpanzees, Ruwenzori colobus arboreal monkeys and is home to 280 bird species of the 670 bird species found in Rwanda. The Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains, is home to an estimated one-third of the worldwide mountain gorilla population, offering some of the best gorilla trekking safaris on the planet where you get to see these timid and passive family oriented giants against the beautiful backdrop of endless green, luscious hills and soaring mountains. To the west of the park, lies one of the main water bodies, Lake Kivu, which offers stunning beaches & jutting peninsulas.

Its capital Kigali known for its vibrant nightlife, is located centrally on the Ruganwa River, & sprawls across numerous hills, ridges and valleys.

The climate of Rwanda is temperate to subtropical, with two rainy seasons, March to May & October to November, and two dry seasons each year. The average Temperature ranges from 24.6℃ to 27.6℃, with the hottest months being August and September.

Marhaba holidays organised a half-day trip to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage for me, and I couldn’t have asked for better service. Felix is super responsive, kind and patient, and even dealt with a last minute change without a problem.

As for Ashleen, who took me to and from the orphanage, she was absolutely perfect. She arrived slighty early, was delightful company and even helped me find a lovely little cafe where to drop me off before we parted.
